Art at Lanercost

At Lanercost C of E Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.

Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

Our Art Curriculum

At Lanercost C of E Primary School, Art and Design is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum, providing children with opportunities to develop skills, creativity and self-expression. Pupils experience a high-quality art education that inspires, challenges and encourages them to experiment, invent and create purposeful artwork, whether as personal expression or through exploring the styles of artists from different cultures and periods in history. Children are supported to take risks, reflect on their work and evaluate their progress through age-appropriate discussion and written reflection, helping them to continually improve.

Teaching is guided by the Kapow Primary revised Art and Design scheme, an expert-designed, Artsmark partner programme that aligns with the National Curriculum and the school’s values. Learning is carefully sequenced through a spiral curriculum, enabling children to revisit and build on key skills with increasing complexity. The curriculum is structured around five key strands—generating ideas, using sketchbooks, making skills, knowledge of artists, and evaluating and analysing—and is delivered through the core areas of drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D, and craft and design.
