Developing Values, Building Character
At Lanercost Church of England Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economics Education (PSHE) plays a vital role in primary education. PSHE is integral to developing children's values and allows them to become positive citizens in a forever-changing community. Our PSHE curriculum aims to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

PSHE and RSE at Lanercost
We aim to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.
At Lanercost C of E Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos and links closely to our Christian values. When taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.
Our PHSE and RSE Curriculum
PSHE is so important because it provides opportunities to teach children how to keep safe, identify unsafe situations and ask for help.
At Lanercost, we follow and work from the ‘SCARF’ scheme of work across the whole school. SCARF offers a sequential, cumulative and progressive PSHE and RSHE curriculum, ensuring complete coverage across all ages. Throughout each mixed-age year, we complete the following five units and then teach ‘KIDSAFE’ or NSPCC’s PANTS on a bi-annual rotation.
Our PSHE lessons are planned with the needs of our children in mind and they provide an inclusive environment where they can feel comfortable and safe to discuss issues they are worried or feel anxious about. Lessons and tasks are differentiated to suit the needs of all. We may support our children through the use of devices such as iPads to allow children to talk type, or through smaller guided groups with an adult who scribes and/or supports discussion.
