Music at Lanercost
At Lanercost C of E Primary School, we are passionate about teaching our children the skills to sing, improvise and perform musical pieces. We encourage our children to experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.
We believe that by offering opportunities in the wider curriculum, we reach out to all children's interests and talents.
Our Music Curriculum
At Lanercost Primary School, music is valued as a powerful form of communication that inspires, motivates and enriches children’s lives. Through singing, listening, composing and performing, pupils develop confidence, creativity and a deeper understanding of the world, as music reflects culture and society.
Using a combination of Kapow, Cumbria Music Services and Singing opportunities, children experience a wide range of musical genres and learn key skills such as finding the pulse, following rhythm and notation, improvising and performing both individually and collaboratively. Singing is central in the early years and Key Stage 1, supporting musical understanding and enjoyment, while progression across the school enables pupils to listen critically, express preferences sensitively and make judgements about musical quality.
Music is taught as an enjoyable, inclusive subject and is often linked across the curriculum, providing meaningful opportunities for all children to engage with and enjoy music.
